The woes and worries of flight cancellation

Flight Delays Compensation – Flight Cancellation

Airline customers throughout the UK often seek some form of compensation for flight cancellations which occur all too often these days thanks to unreliable airline companies. A great deal of these companies will instead offer alternative or delayed flights in place of their customers’ original bookings in order to placate them and avoid any further action. However many customers will go further than this, and attempt to gain some form of financial settlement in order to compensate them for their flight cancellation. This is understandable, as for many holiday makers and travellers a cancelled flight could force the cancellation of their entire holiday or cause a substantial delay resulting in a great deal of disappointment and financial loss for the customer.

According to European flight laws and regulations, under most circumstances airline companies are legally required to provide some form of compensation for flight cancellation. Customers will generally have the option of being re-routed to their original destination (although the delays involved with this can cause a great deal of stress and inconvenience) or they wish to apply for a refund in many circumstances. If for any reason a passenger is left stranded part way through their journey, the airline is legally obliged to return them to their original departure point. As well as this, the airline must also provide suitable accommodation and other amenities as well as compensation for their flight cancellation.  Despite these regulations however, in special circumstances the airline may try to refuse to repay the customer for their flight and argue that the flight cancellation was caused as a result of circumstances which were beyond their control.

Although the threat of legal action may in many instances be enough to persuade the airline that is responsible to compensate its customers. There are also several other methods which can be employed in order to receive the desired outcome. A complaint letter explaining that you have been subjected to a flight cancellation as a result of an airline mistake may in many instances be enough to persuade them to compensate you for your inconvenience. If you choose send them a formal letter of this nature, an online template may be useful in terms of legally outlining your position as their customer and your desire for some form of compensation relating to your cancelled flight. In any case it is important to outline the seriousness of your complaint and to outline the fact that they will be held responsible in a court of law.

If for whatever reason a letter fails to achieve the desired outcome, it may be necessary for you to contact the Air Transport Users Council, who will be able to provide advice and can complain to the airline regarding the flight cancellation on your behalf. In rare circumstances, you may wish to consult with a solicitor specialising in travel law who will be able to advise you on your case.
