Being a tax solicitor is a profession in itself. Not only do tax solicitors need to be up to date with the law but also good with numbers and forms. A tax solicitors job involves interpreting tax law and then applying it to tax situations such as buying property.

There can be two types of work a tax solicitor can do in corporate law. The first relates to working on what tax implications are involved in a transaction. This can involve working out the tax and preparing documents relevant to the transaction.

The second type of work can relate to advising companies of tax implications before a transaction takes place. This can include advice on the most efficient way to reduce tax in a proposed transaction.

Tax solicitors can also help companies by changing how a company runs or where they keep their money can reduce the amount of tax payable. An example of this is the band U2 being based in the Netherlands meaning they pay less tax.

There can also be times when tax solicitors work with accountants. This can be for advice on the law relating to tax or when accountants are needed for a transaction.

Tax solicitors can be used for investigations, litigations and negotiations between individuals and the tax authorities such as the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

As there are so many different types of taxes it can be hard to keep track of what needs to be paid for what. It can also be the case that some people are paying too much tax.

If tax is not paid it can lead to serious consequences, such as large fines and sometimes even imprisonment. Tax solicitors will usually be needed for someone making a claim or defending a claim. Usually it is the HMRC that is making a claim. However, a claim can be made if a person or company believes they have paid too much tax. This can be difficult to calculate, especially if there are large numbers involved any numerous different types of taxes.

With different types of taxes there are also a number of exemptions available. The exemptions can sometimes be unknown to many people and could be a lot of people are paying tax when in reality they might not have to pay so much.
