Environmental Law
Keeping it green
In this age of conservation and ‘going green’, environmental law is at the heart of a number of issues very important to the majority of people. Established to ensure that the environment has the necessary protections to thrive in our modern world, environmental law levies harsh penalties on those who would befoul the natural world, whether through intention or mere happenstance.
Preventing pollution
One of the main ways in which environmental law serves the public is to place limitations on the extent to which companies may harm the planet in their endless quest for profit. Without legislation in place, many irresponsible industrialists would be free to cause irreparable damage to the world around us, leaving our wilds abandoned with wild abandon.
Fortunately, we have laws in place which seek to prevent this; specifically, legislation relating to air pollution, water pollution and land pollution.
Keeping the environment safe
Of course, it is not just corporations which can cause trouble in our natural surroundings; careless or malicious individuals can also make problems for those who want to live in a cleaner world. Inconsiderately placed bonfires, unpleasant smells and even the smoke from the humble cigarette can all ruin our enjoyment of the outside world. This is why regulations are in place to ensure that those who partake of potentially ruinous activities must take care as to when and where they do so.
Those acts against the environment which are more clearly malicious in nature are classed as environmental crimes. These often involve smaller-scale versions of the polluting ways of some large corporations; for example, fly-tipping and littering. Others are simply health hazards, such as extensive dog fouling, or destroy the ambience of an area, as with graffiti and fly-posting. There are rules in place against these activities, and these can be brought to bear if necessary.
The importance of environmental issues
Environment issues are at the forefront of public conscience these days. UK law aims to keep up with these issues and prevent any of them from turning into more serious problems in the future.
Why the law smiles on those who recycle
Depending on who you speak to, recycling is either an irritating and futile exercise, or one of the ways in which we must act to save our polluted planet.
Environmental management — keeping pollution under wraps
Environmental management is the concept of getting the most out of the environment in a way that is sustainable, rather than simply conserving the environment for its own sake.
