Interview Preparation

So you’ve got an interview? Make sure that when you turn up you are prepared. A lack of effort in this respect will be immediately obvious to your interviewer(s) and certainly will not impress them.

Make sure you know exactly where you’re going; print off a map and give yourself plenty of time to get there – it’s better to be early than late. Make sure you look your smartest, as this will be the only chance you get to make a first impression. Also keep anything you might be carrying in your left hand, so that you can shake hands without any awkward shuffling.

Appearance and punctuality should be a given in an interview situation, but what’s really important is showing the interviewer that you know what you’re talking about. So do plenty of research and preparation beforehand to make sure you aren’t left stumped by a difficult question. Start by learning your CV back to front and making sure you have plenty to say about everything you’ve included. Do the same for the description of the position you are applying for. Remember the names of your interviewers and anyone else at the company who you’ve been in contact with.

Do as much research on the company as possible. The company’s website is usually the best source for useful information, and if you haven’t read that beforehand it is likely that you will get caught out during the interview. If you know anyone else already employed by the company or in a similar role elsewhere, speak to them about it. Trade press and national newspapers can also be valuable sources of information, or you can call the company directly and ask for a brochure, or any other information they have available.
