N163 Skeleton Argument
A skeleton argument is a document which sets out an overview of the case which a party will present a court hearing. In most cases, the Court will request a copy of the skeleton argument in advance of the hearing so that the judge can read through it and knows what to expect at the hearing.
The skeleton argument should be set out chronologically, identifying the order in which the party proposes to deal with points and address issues. It should contain references to any cases, statutes or evidence on which the party will rely, and it may be useful to incorporate key dates and figures together with important quotations for the Court’s ease of reference.
A clear and concise skeleton argument is invaluable in helping the Court to follow your points and understand your case, and therefore makes it more likely that you will be able to persuade the court to rule in your favour.
