Community Care Direct Payments Act 1996
This Act of Parliament established the Direct Payments scheme by which people can pay for social care.
The Act allowed local authorities to make payments to disabled people for them to pay for their own care with, rather than the local authority themselves providing the care.
The new scheme helped to give those who were eligible greater independence, by allowing them to choose the care which they felt best suited them.
