Will an internet Will send things down the tubes?

An internet Will may be written by a solicitor, but more often when using these kinds of services it will be put together by someone who is referred to simply as a “Will writer”. There is, however, no qualification that an individual needs to attain in order to call themselves a Will writer, unlike with solicitors.

Will-writing is an unregulated industry, despite several organisations which attempt to present themselves as authorities, and so you engage the services of a Will writer at your own risk. There are some such internet Will services provided by large organisations which are household names, so if you wish to make use of a Will writer then it may be a good idea to use them.

Bearing in mind everything said here, it’s important to remember that any of these services are only as good as the business that offers them. You won’t get any benefits from a shoddily-made internet Will, no matter how cheap or easy it is to complete.

If you are unwilling to take a chance in terms of your internet Will, or if your financial and legal situation is extremely complicated, then you may wish to go all the way and  employ a solicitor to put your Will together. A solicitor’s service has many advantages, not least the layers of regulation and indemnity insurance in place to ensure that any mistakes or misconduct on their part will lead to a compensatory payout for you or your loved ones.

However, solicitors are generally old-fashioned and it is unlikely that you will get much service from them online, nor will they offer much by the way of an internet Will – at the most you can expect contact information so you can get in touch with them on a more formal basis, or a Find a Solicitor online service enabling you to be put in touch with the right solicitor for your needs.
