Q: My employee came in yesterday and said she would like to hand in her resignation and in giving notice she would like to retire by the end of this academic year in August. She is turning 60 in July and I would like to know the best way to go about this retirement process.
A: You no longer have a fair reason to dismiss your employee as you would have needed to serve notice before April in the previous year. Your employee has not yet turned 65 so cannot resign on grounds of retirement. She is also the one giving notice, i.e. resignation, and not the other way round. It would be wise to request her to put this in writing and then decide to accept.
The council closed the road where my restaurant is located for 3 weeks. I received no notification and my business took an enormous hit in takings as a result of this. The road has been reopened and they have indicated that they will be working on the pavements, which will again affect my business. I have called the council but the person I need to speak to is never there. What should I do about this situation?
read moreI run a painting and decorating company. We are currently amidst a very big job whereby the client is pushing us to finish. Some of my employees have come in to help recently. I asked my other employees if they would be available to help; a few said yes, yet one of my employees refused and stated that he would do so only if he received a pay rise. In the contract it states that, from time to time, employees will be required to work overtime and cannot unreasonably refuse. What is the next step I can take?
