Q: I am friends with a family whose 18 year old daughter would like to gain some work experience on my farm before she goes to college. I would like to know what implications there would be if I do not propose to pay the girl. I would like to help her if I can. I would be proposing to take her on for college for a period of 2 years.
A: The girl’s placement is linked with a college qualification so her work experience could potentially be regarded as an apprenticeship. There are different implications regarding payment but it is statutory to pay national minimum wage for people carrying out work experience and apprenticeships. It would be wise to speak to the college to clarify whether an apprenticeship is necessary. It is also helpful to look on the government business website and UK apprenticeship website.
